How We Search Now (In Case You Haven’t Noticed)

Last week I ran a super-quick poll with my network: “How do you search for information online these days?” The answers were mixed—traditional search, social media, and AI tools—but here’s the kicker: everyone admitted they use AI in some capacity now. This isn’t a fluke. Search in 2025 is faster, more conversational, and pulling answers from more places than ever before.

I had a great lunch with a new connection, Charles from Direct Déménagement International, where we went from global expansion to culture to marketing. When he asked what’s changed in search, my reply was short: the game looks different, but the rules for winning are the same. You just need to get organized.

SEO, AIO, GEO… Oh Eh Ah, here we go!.

Acronyms make us sound busy and justified…important. We might as well keep it going before we ultimately get replaced by robots anyway. You may have heard a few new ones:

  • SEO — the classic art and science of ranking in search engines. Still essential.
  • AIO (AI Optimization) — structure your content so generative AI (think large language models and Google’s AI Overviews) can find and use it when answering queries.
  • GEO (Geo-Targeted Optimization) — local SEO on steroids: show up for people searching in a specific city, region, or country.

It all sounds fancy, but it boils down to one thing: make your information clear and accessible for the robots. Or, as The Notorious B.I.G. might say, “and if you don’t know, now you know.”

The Real Secret: Your Website Needs a Dose of OCD

With AI-driven answers rising, your website isn’t optional. It’s the single source of truth that AI models turn to for reliable data. But these models won’t pull from a messy source.

Think of AI as a hyper-efficient librarian (minus the dusty glasses and the “shh!”). It needs your content perfectly cataloged. Structure is your competitive advantage.

What “organized” actually looks like
  • Logical site map: every page has a purpose and a place.
  • Clear, descriptive headlines: leave no room for guessing.
  • Schema markup: tell search engines what each piece of content is (LocalBusiness, Article, FAQ, Event, etc.).
  • Consistent NAP: name, address, phone — consistent across your site and directories.
  • Authoritative content: case studies, testimonials, expert bylines — evidence matters.

Quick practical tip: start with three schema types most SMBs need — LocalBusiness, Article, and FAQ. They’re small wins with big visibility impact.

What This Means For Everyone?

For the SMB owner

Your website is now a 24/7 salesperson and the primary source AI uses to build answers. Structure it well, and when AI answers questions about your industry, it will be more likely to use your information. You cannot, I repeat, you cannot rely on social media alone.

For the corporation

Brand control becomes an SEO play. If AI is summarizing your business for millions of users, you want those summaries to come from an authoritative, well-structured site — not a stale third-party profile.

For the everyday searcher

When you read an AI-generated answer, remember it was compiled from sources that models deemed organized and trustworthy. That context helps you judge the answer and trace it back to its origin.

Stop Chasing Algorithms and Start Organizing

At AFDV Marketing, we don’t panic about algorithm changes — we get organized. We focus on clear information architecture, strong on-page signals, and authoritative content that AI loves to reference. That’s how your visibility becomes stable and defensible.

If you don’t want to become an AIO expert (you’re running a business, not becoming Google’s intern), that’s fine. Our job is to be your outsourced marketing partner who obsesses over structure, content, and strategy so you can run your business.

Start with content that’s designed to be discovered. I made a free ChatGPT content-structure prompt that helps you outline a pillar blog post — the kind of organized, authoritative content AI favors.
